Quote Collections:

a.
-One day when we had stopped, a workman took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought each other to the death for a few crumbs; The German workmen took a lively interest in this spectacle.

-One of you does not seem to have understood this. I’d obliged, therefore, to make it very clear to him once and for all. I felt the sweat run down my back. A-7713. I came forward. A box he ordered. They brought him a box. Lie down on it. On your stomach. I obeyed. Then I was aware of nothing but the strokes of the whip.

-Not far from us, flames were leaping up from a ditch, gigantic flames. They were burning something. A lorry drew up at the pit and delivered its load-little children. Babies! Yes, I saw it- saw it with my own eyes, those children in the flames.

b.
- I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I have not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me.

-There were no prayers at his grave. No candles were lit to his memory. His last word was my name. A summons, to which I did not respond. I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I had no more tears.

-Three prisoners brought a table and some medical instruments. With the left sleeve rolled up, each person passed in front of the table.  The three veterans with needles in their hands engraved a number on our left arms. I became A-7713. After that I had no name.

Group Reader Response LC#2 Dialectical Journal Practice

Critical Stance:

a.     Dehumanization: The psychological process of demonizing the enemy, making them seem less than human and hence not worthy of humane treatment. This can lead to increased violence, human rights violations, war crimes, and genocide.
b.     Some of the various prisoners have various behaviors in this concentration camp environment. Brothers Yossi and Tibi stuck together like glue. They stood by each other sides through thick and thin. The prison environment didn’t rattle them from their goals. During this time in the camps people understood the lesson of every man for himself. The life of being alone and separated is a must to survive in this type of environment.
c.      When Eliezer first entered the camp he, believed in his religion very greatly and knew the god would help him and his family out of this situation. Putting his faith in the hands of god and having hope that everything will turn out all right. Over the period of being in the camp Eliezer slowly loses his faith in god. He sees that this trust in getting troubling and difficult to hold on too.

Dialectical Journal Entries:
b.
Let’s keep together. We shall be stronger

I wanted to run away, but my legs were glued to the ground. Idek seized me by throat

            c.
This day I had ceased to plead. I was no longer capable of lamentation. On the contrary, I felt very strong. I was the accuser, God the accused.

My eyes were open and I was alone- terribly alone in a world without God and without man. Without love or mercy.

Group Reader Response LC #1: Dialectical Journal Practice

1.Critical Stance

Wiesel showed that the Jews were strong and independent. They believed in their religion heavily and knew that they were protected by their gods and one another. When news comes to town whether it is bad or good, there are two types of reactions to the situation that the Jews are going to be in. Some people act in fear, or disbelief. They feel very certain that this situation won’t come to the town. To them it’s a total lie, a crazy thought, it’s just another way to get the Jews in trouble. However others like Eliezer, response to the situation a little bit differently. They have trust and faith in others and their Jewish religion that this is a sign. They don’t act in fear, or disbelief, they act with confidence and hope.

2.Dialectical Journal Entries

a.     Why you do pray? he asked me, after a moment. Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?

This quote from the book is important because it tells you that Eliezer is thinking deeply about life and what each action means each day. This quotes also helps him understand how people around him his friends, family, and community effect him and his decisions. This quote also relevant to the critical stance.

b.     Water! Mummy! Water!

This quote represents how the Jews could only provide so much for their children. They were being sent on transportation vehicles not knowing the condition or what to bring. These Hungarian soldiers didn’t care about the people feeling and how they felt.

c.      When is your turn coming? I asked my father. The day after tomorrow

This quote means that the Jews know that they are being taken away but they still stand strong and believe that the journey will be safe. Eliezer is protecting him self from what is to come.

d.     But we had reached a station: Those who were next to the windows told us its name: “Auschwitz”

This quote embodies how that that sign is the beginning of what is yet to come in this camp. It tells you what the rest of book is going to be about, just by the quote.  It symbolizes how these Jews feel and how they will feel.

e.     You must never lose faith, even when the sword hangs over your head. That’s the teaching of our sages

This quote represents how even though they are in the concentration camp and could die at any moment, the Jews should never lose sight of hope. Live each moment, and believe in your religion.

Introductory Assignment to "Night"

Madison & Erin K.

Example 1:
 http://www.thestar.com.my/Lifestyle/People/2014/08/08/Pakistan-women-face-acid-attacks/
The first link to an act of inhumanity is of acid attacks in Pakistan. Women in Pakistan get acid thrown on their faces as a punishment or for just being a woman. If a woman was trying to get an education or join the political world, they would be attacked with acid. These attacks are keeping women in their houses because they are afraid to be attacked by strangers. If you didn’t pay your debt to a family member, they would be the person attacking you. Some cases get so severe that their faces are unrecognizable and they aren’t able to see, hear, or use their mouths. Acid attacks are now becoming very common in Pakistan but most people around the world have no idea what’s going on.

Example 2:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30394260

This link is talking about an inhumane act in Tanzania, Africa, where albino people are being killed for their body parts and are being used in witchcraft. Albino people have a big target on their back and could be killed at anytime of day. They live in remote places in Tanzania so they can be hidden from the killers, but they are still not safe anywhere they go. Some people in the community built a statue promoting the right of albino people. This statue reminds people that albino people are the same as everyone else. The statue still didn’t stop people from killing albino people.

Allusion Poem: Final

Braiding my brown hair into two piggy tails
Putting on my blue checkered dress
Carrying my brown weaved basket
Looking over the rainbow
Where the blue birds fly every morning
I’m going to follow the road will lead me to success
I’m going to follow the road will help me find friendship
Taking my first step on the road

My slippers shine bright on a rainy day
When the skies is gray my slippers turn red
The storm has hit, it rushes through my face
My parents fighting once again
I just want to escape from this world
Now I have, into this wonderful land
people call Oz

Walking down the road, seeing corn for miles
No one in sight, no friends I see, I just don’t believe my eyes
I enter this new world, all in color
With things so small, but other things massive
I look at them from right to left

Giving people a helping hand
When they are at their lowest point
No brain, no heart and no courage
Things that my friends desire in life
Taking my friends somewhere
Where their dreams can come true
A place where they can get a
A brain, a heart, and courage
But continuing to get home sick
And wanting to be with my family once again

I click the heels of my slippers three times
There’s no place like home, There’s no place like home I say to myself
From this journey I have learned
that a heart is no judged by how much you love
but by how much you are loved by others
Upbraiding my braids
Unbuckling my shoes

I can’t wait to fall asleep and wake up to another
