Dear Aloha Gelato,

I love gelato much more than any other desert, especially ice cream. If I could go and buy your gelato every day I would. Your wonderful customer service and your variety of flavors keep me coming back every time.

With being a teenager I don’t have all the money in the world to buy anything I please. I have a budget to stick to so I don’t over spend my money. The very first time I had your gelato your amazing customer service drew me in. They were out going and I just needed to see what they were selling. When seeing all your chooses I couldn’t resist. One of your workers let me sample some of your fully flavored gelatos. So I bought a one scoop of sea salt caramel. I pulled out my wallet and saw the price. I paid $4.99 for one scoop of gelato, with tax that comes out to around $5.00. When I could of paid $2 for one scoop of ice cream from Baskin Robbins. Or $3 scoop from Via Gelato.

The average scoop size for ice cream is between 5-8oz, if you buy a small cup from Baskin Robbins, for example. The average scoop size for your gelato is half of that. Your cups that the gelato is being served in aren’t its real size. The bottom of the cup is raised to give the customer the perception of a full cup. I think it’s very wrong to make customer over pay for what they are buying.

To serve your gelato, its temperature needs to be around 10-22 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice cream on the other hand has to have a temperature of around 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit. Since gelato doesn’t need to be kept at a colder temperature than ice cream, your company should be saving some money. I understand that you offer other things on your menu such as your waffles, coffee, teas, Italian sodas, and specialty drinks so that eats up some of your saving. You’re high cost for your gelato and other menu items should be enough to cover anything.

I understand that the rent for your space at Ala Moana could be pricey because of the tenants charged, the Common Area Maintenance fees, the Real Property Tax and giving some of your sales to the landlord. Gelato is made up of the same basic ingredients as ice cream milk, water, sugar and milk-solid-non-fat (MSNF). The only real difference between ice cream and gelato is that gelato uses more milk than cream, so it’s a healthier version of ice cream. With ice cream having an increasing amount of cream it’s more expensive. Now days ice cream companies pay “premium” or super premium” cream. Gelato companies like yourself should be saving some of your money just by buying milk instead of cream. I know that your gelato ingredients are all natural and of great quality which I am thankful for. I feel that your ingredients enhance the flavors, which make you one of the best gelato places in Oahu.

I feel that if you raise the prices to high people will stop coming. If prices were reasonable then I predict business would be sky rocking. Having a small scoop of your gelato for $3, then people would come back everyday. A lot of people on yelp say “amazing gelato, small portions, and too expensive”. I believe with some changes in your prices, should change customer satisfaction rating. I will still eat your amazing gelato when every I can. Even if I am broke.

Sincerely,
Erin Kobayashi

Risky Business: Stereotype Final Draft Essay

Nerds, jocks, Goth, and preppy are just a few of the stereotypes we hear in high school almost every single day.  Stereotype a noun, defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes are assumption that people make based on what they see and make people fear social interaction at high school. Social categorization, discrimination has the same meaning as stereotypes. Like in the movie "Mean Girls," many adolescent girls have perfected the lunchroom snub and the art of vicious gossiping says ABC News. Following stereotypes do not lead to success by limiting you to associate with other stereotypes, making you feel obligated to act a certain way, and change your priorities in life.

Stereotypes often set a role for us, telling us how to act. With a role being set for us, us teens don’t have to question the social rules of high school. All we have to do is follow them, which is easy enough. With a role or stereotype placed upon us we don’t have to deal with social awkwardness. Although we might think that having your high school life all straighten out is a good thing, well it’s not. The roots from T.V, magazines, books, etc. generalize what type of stereotype fits you best. An estimated 160,000 children miss school every day out of fear of attack or intimidation by other students says officials. Since we won’t have our priorities in check we do things that are not the best for our body and mind. 23.5 million persons aged 12 or older needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2009 and 1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. We do these stupid little actions because it helps us fit in. If the priorities were set right from the beginning we wouldn’t have to deal with drug abuse and bullying. By seeing things one way we forget that having a role isn't the best option. Being yourself and creating your own role is much better.

Being in high school your priorities need to be set straight, but with stereotypes in the way we feel the need to set them aside. Taking part in a stereotype means that your priorities are being a set aside, but it’s for the better. You will soon fix your priorities to set them with the social group that you hang out with. Feeling the need to be in a stereotype just to fit in with the crowd is tough, but we do it anyway. Stereotypes over take our sense of priorities, messing with our heads, making us think it’s a good thing when it’s really not. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report of 2004 says that nearly 10 percent of high school girls say they’ve been in a physical fight in the last 12 months. When joining a stereotype you feel obligated to act a certain way. If we have to put a fight we will to stay with the stereotype we think we belong to. The stereotype threat is a significant factor in the achievement gap (Massey et al., 2003). These studies shed considerable light on how stereotypes suppress the performance, motivation, and learning of students who have to contend with them, and they suggest what educators can do to help (Aronson & Steele, 2005). When being someone that is completely not you, you feel uncomfortable. Stereotypes make people feel like they don't belong.

Entering the high school world, the first thing you want to do is to make friends. Being in a stereotype makes that ten times easier. With a group of people already form you would fit right in. Having no trouble being alone when it comes to lunch. Stereotypes make people uncomfortable when being friendly. In the real world you have to communicate with people on a personal level. Limiting yourself to associate with certain stereotypes will allow you to make close friends. Stereotype threat can be overcome with the proper mind-set about the nature of ability, and this mind-set can be taught (Dweck, 1999). Having only certain people that talk to you to really understand them. When you limit yourself you don't get to experience the interaction of other people surrounding you. "They don't know how to handle conflict face to face because so many things happen through some sort of technology," said Melissa Ortega, a child psychologist at New York's Child Mind Institute. Stereotypes enable us to respond to situations.

Stereotypes contradict the way the human mind should think. Making people feel isolated about their actions. Prejudging them based on how they look and act. A real friend will get to know you, be by your side. A friend will tell you to do things for them but won’t do the same for you. Having a stereotype placed on you makes us feel that we belong in society and we are not outcast. Stereotypes do not lead to success because they change who you are really suppose to be in life. For much of history, our society portrays African-Americans as being unintelligent, lazy, or violence-prone. As a result of these stereotyped pictures of African-Americans we are pre judging them before even meeting them. What society doesn’t see are the all the African-American people that did well for their community, state, and country. But us Americans fail to put that stereotype aside. Stereotypes don’t lead to success because it doesn’t let us see truly who people are.

College Essay Final Draft

University of Southern California Prompt:
Describe the world you come from for example, your family, community or school and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
A T.V show life is every girl’s dreams. Where you win prom queen, you date the most popular football guy and get to be the captain of the cheerleading squad.  Plus you would be a genius student who takes all A.P and honors classes, gets pick to be the smartest in the class and is the president of the school. I used to be that girl the one that wanted to wear that crown on my head and be the genius. That little girl dream is still inside today, but my world wasn’t supposed to be like that. My world was supposed to be filled with different elements. My T.V show world has different channels that express family, friends, high school and soccer. These four channels never fade away. Theses channels show how I can reach that T.V show life in a different way.
The first channel that always pops up on the T.V is the family and friends channel. The channel that started on my very first T.V. My family and friends are the backbone, the cable box that makes the T.V work. My family is with me through it all. All the nights were I stay up until midnight finishing up a project. The times where I need comfort and support. My family does so much for me to succeed. Without my family I can’t imagine having the life I have now without them. Friends are just like my family but they understand me at my level. They get why I’m so stressed all the time. Why I sometimes I don’t know what to do. Why sometimes parents are just stressing us out more. My friends keep me calm when I’m about to burst because of all this homework I’m getting. Without my friends and family I won't have this type of friendly environment.
Flipping through the channels the high school channel is always in the middle. Everybody says high school can either be the best or the worst time of your life. To me high school is what you make of it. I am taking high school as an adventure, learning from my mistake. Not being afraid to make mistakes because if I make a mistake in high school I won’t make the same mistake in the future. With high school comes homework and loads of it. Most of the times I can’t enjoy high school because I have homework. With going to high school almost 365 days I can get a feel on a routine. Wake up, go to school, go to soccer practice, eat dinner, do homework, go to sleep. Then the cycle starts again. High school has given me opportunities to grow as a person.
The soccer channel always the last channel on the T.V, but it's the most important channel there is. Soccer is defined as a game played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball that may not be touched with the hands or arms during play except by the goalkeepers. The object of the game is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponent’s goal. To me soccer is a game where you work together as one team to score that goal. With me playing soccer for eleven years I learned a lot. One lesson that I have learned is that the bigger the risk the bigger the reward. I have applied this lesson to everything in life. At school, if I take a risk by trying something new, then my reward is meeting new people. It’s not always the outcome I would expect but it’s something that will help along through life. Soccer isn’t just a sport, it teaches me lessons that my family can’t teach me.
My aspiration in life was always to care for people. My mom said, “It was in my nature”. When I was 4 years I always wanted to make my little sister happy. My sister would always be upset because she couldn’t do things I could. I tried my best to make her feel special by playing dress up with her. It was always hard because of the two-year difference. Till this day I always wanted to my sister happy. My sister still feels down when she can't go high school events. That’s why I want to peruse a job in the health care field. I feel that the health care field will allow me to make people happy and helps me grow. My world has shaped my aspiration and dreams by making me understand how my decisions effect others. My world is complete for now, until I grow then my world grows. That means more elements come into play to make me the person that I will become in the future. Family, friends, high school and soccer show how I can reach that T.V show life in a different way. My own way. I can become prom queen by being an active participant in school activities. I can take A.P and honors classes by managing my time. That little girl dream to have T.V show life is still inside me. My T.V show world is 100% complete until it's time to add more channels.

Picture 1:
It was a normal Sunday at the Jones household. 7:00am ate breakfast. Morning family strolls at 10:00am. Lunch at 12:00pm, Dinner at 6:00pm. The only thing missing from the routine is at 6:00am waking up mom and dad. Just waking up only mom doesn’t feel the same to the kids. The Jones family has no idea that after a long 8 months over seas their dad is coming home, their dad wanting to be a surprise. Right before 10:00am the Jones were heading out for their family strolls. All of a sudden the doorbell rings, assuming it was the UPS guy instead it was their father. Everyone is overwhelmed and full of emotions. Now the Jones household will finally be complete.
Picture 2:
October 31, 1888 the most wanted man in American right in front of Kate’s eyes. Holding her gun firmly waiting to shot. Staring directly at her target right in the eye. The man pleading, “please don’t shot me, give me another chance”. Kate doesn't believe one word that can out of his mouth. Kate thinking to herself if I shot him, then the CIA won’t know any of his accomplices. If I don’t shot him he could escape and never be seen again. Kate thinking about the situation. In that moment Kate was shot in the heart and the most wanted man in American was never seen again.

This last point determines who goes home with the gold. The United States up against their greatest competitor, Japan. Jasmine and Kaylee the top beach volleyball players in the history of the United States. Now determines if they are the best of the best. Japan serves the ball over directly to Jasmine, Jasmine bumps the ball over to Kaylee. Kaylee sets a spinning ball to Jasmine. Jasmine tips the ball over the Japan player. The ball hits the sand, the whistle blows, and the United States wins the gold. Knowing all the practices, pains, and stresses is all worth it. Jasmine slides on her knees crying and Kaylee jumps to the sky.

Standing in a 3-hour line to ride the tallest rollercoaster in the United States. Finally when I reached the end, my palms get sweaty. Lucky for me I get to sit in the front. As I pull down the safety bar I start to bit my nails. Just when I clamed myself down the rollercoaster started. We went up and up and up. I can here it clicking and clicking each time we get higher and higher. Starting to shake my legs, arms, and head. Praying I will be all right. Then we headed down. 60 miles per hour winds hitting my face. This feeling can’t be more thrilling. Throwing my hands up in air enjoying the moment.

Picture 5:
Hearing the ice cream jingle coming down the boardwalk my sister gets excited. She tugs my dress to tell me that’s she wants ice cream. So I grab her hand and we walk down to the ice cream truck. While walking to the truck her smile gets bigger and bigger each time we get closer and closer. When we reach the truck she tells me wants try something different. It was applauding because my sister always sticks to what she knows. Her favorite ice cream of all time is chocolate, but she asked for strawberry today. So I asked the ice cream man for one strawberry ice cream in a cone. I give my sister her ice cream and she takes a big bit. So loves the strawberry so much that she asked me for another cone.

College Prompt Essay

University of Southern California Prompt:
Describe the world you come from for example, your family, community or school and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

I wish my world were like T.V show life. Where I win prom queen, I date the most popular football guy and get to be the captain of the cheerleading squad.  Plus I would be a genius student who takes all A.P and honors classes, gets pick to be the smartest in the class and is the president of the school. My world is nothing compared to what I see on T.V. I may look like just a regular standard student who participates in school sports, activities and classes. Have friends to hang with, eat lunch with, and talk with. Plus having a supportive family. But in my eyes my world is filled with highs and lows, laughter, stress, procrastination, and love. My world started off small only knowing family and close family friends, but now my world has grown into something that can’t be stopped. I’m like a sponge soaking up everything around me. The smells, tastes, sights, and sounds. My world is not just a simple equation it’s more like a highly complex equation that is hard to figure out.  The world is made up of living organisms and complex atoms. What is my world made up of you ask? My world is made up of highs and lows, laughter, stress, procrastination, and love.

Love is what gives me hope that I will succeed. Family and friends to me is the definition of love. Giving me support to go through my day hoping something good comes out of it. Family is the structure and foundation of my world. Love doesn’t always have to be for your family. I feel that I love my friends and how much they do for me. Keeping me on my toes and helping me along the way. Stress what causes me to flip out and become angry at everything. Can’t control my emotions and feeling inside. Having that feeling inside that my parents are pushing me so hard. Needing a break my talking to my closest friends. Doesn’t matter boy or girl as long as they understand me. Without stress, my world would be too perfect. Having an unstable world gives me a chance to have challenges in life. To test my boundaries with boys, school, and the outside world. Seeing what I can do under pressure and see what the result is. Learning from my mistakes to clam my stress levels down. Love and stress a perfect combination and sweet and spicy all into one are completing 2/5 of my world.

Procrastination a habit of mine when doing homework. Thinking, yeah I have lots of time. Then suddenly the clock strikes 9, my bedtime. Falling asleep thinking about oh I shouldn’t have gone to soccer practice, I wish I did it sooner. All these thoughts juggling in my brain how to get everything done but still put out quality work. Completing what I can before I get in trouble. When getting to school realizing that all my friends didn’t finish the assignment to gives me a sense of relief. Laughing and hoping we don’t have a pop quiz. Laughter is what gets me through the day. Giving me a chuckle or something to talk about on and on and on. Having something that reminds me not to stress out. To enjoy life now because you never know when it can be taken away from you. Wanting to life my high school life as the best possible is hard when focusing on school. Procrastination and stress a horrible combination, but when mixed perfectly then it becomes something that works in harmony completing 2/5 of my world.

Highs and lows what pushes me to become better each day. Seeing what others can do pushes me to better than I am.
Always wanting an A on every test but them getting back your test scores you got a D. Knowing that the next test I take I will study extra hard to earn that A. When I’m at my highest, I’m excited and cheerful then some how in a second I get at my lowest point. Knowing that my family is trying all they can to help me but I think it’s me who is the problem. Trying to fix out the bugs so I don’t have these rollercoaster moments. Most of my highs and lows come from soccer. Soccer teaches so much sometimes something’s my parents can’t teach me. Seeing my friends all getting down their ankle juggling gets me really upset. I feel that I hit rock bottom that I’m not trying hard enough. I keep practicing and practicing then I finally can do at least five. Now I feel accomplished even though it is only five I know I just have to practice harder if I want to juggle more.  Having rollercoaster’s moments help me change my attitude towards. Finally completing the 1/5 of my world.

Dreaming and believing are two different things. When dreaming I’m thinking about impossible things that couldn’t happen. When believing it takes it to a whole new level. Seeing with my imagination about what is to come with my family, friends, boys, and school. My aspiration in life was always to care for people. My mom said “It was in my nature”. When I was 4 years I always wanted to make my little sister happy. My sister would always be upset because she couldn’t do things I could. I tried my best to make her feel special by playing dress up with her. It was always hard because there was a two-year difference. Till this day I always wanted to make people feel better. If someone is not happy then I’m not happy. That’s why I want to peruse a job in the health care field because I enjoy seeing people feel better. Having these highs and lows, laughter, stress, procrastination and love changed my view on life. Seeing problems in a new perspective really helps me understand my choices affect people. Figuring out what dreams and aspirations easy because my world has shown my right pathway. My world is now complete for now, until I grow then my world grows. That means more elements come into play to make me the person that I will become in the future. My world is nothing like a T.V show world but in my T.V show it is 100% complete for now.

Coming of Age Final Draft

Scooping my rice and plopping my corn on my plate. Using the tongs to pick up slices of chicken katsu. So hungry after a long day at soccer practice. Waiting until the clock strikes 7:30 to watch the premiere of a T.V show called Young and Hungry on ABC family. I knew the show would be a funny to watch just like modern family. Some show to get hooked on like pretty little lairs for 6 seasons. Once the clock struck 7:30 I was so excited I couldn’t even finish my food.

The first episode was introducing a girl named Gabi (Emily Osment) and she had no confidence in herself in getting her dream-cooking job, which was becoming a personal chef. Her best friend named Sofia told Gabi that she is an amazing cook and Gabi should always tell herself “I got this” so she can stay confidence in herself. After the talk with Sofia, Gabi took Sofia’s advice and went after her dream of becoming a personal chef. Her boss’s right hand man, Elliot not really believing she has what it takes to become the chef. Gabi proved everyone wrong. At the end Gabi got the job as the personal chef. I knew this shows was suppose to be a comedy, but to me I knew it was going to be much more than that.

The next morning driving to school, looking out of the window re watching the show in my head over and over again. Seeing the TV show reflection in the window. Thinking about what Gabi did in certain situations in life. Trying to think if I was in anyone of those situations. My consensus always said NO. My mind always goes back to the quote "I got this”.  I figured that the quote would give me a boost of confidence and encouragement to get through the day since this quote was stuck in my head. Plus if this quote helps Gabi it should help me. During school I had to present a power point in front of the class. So as usually I'm freaking out hoping I don't get picked first or last. Shaking my left leg over and over again. I try and tell myself to stop but it won’t stop shaking. So what kept me clam and confidence is I said to myself “I got this”. Probably I said it like hundred times, but it really gave me a confidence boost. After the presentation I felt amazing like all if needed was a push and I’m off.

Before the T.V show aired I was lacking self-confidence and hope. I never believed in my work or my talent. I always compared myself to other people. Everyone tells me my work was great but I always wanted it to be perfect. I always wanted to be the best at everything and get perfect scores and perfect grades. Also never wanting to present in front of a crowd, so ashamed to say my opinion in class. Not even raising my hand to ask a question. I came to reality after watching this T.V show. Knowing that people will be smarter than me, faster than me, and better than me in anything I do. I just couldn't see that I need to have faith and hope in myself to become the person I wanted to be. Thinking that having self-confidence will not be the key to success and just sticking to my own thing.

I realized all shows say they teach lessons, like how to be kind and to be honest. This particular show, Young and Hungry teaches lessons that relate to how I feel inside and how I can over come them to become a better more confidence person. People like me that don’t always believe in them 100% 24/7 needs this kind of advice. Once watching this T.V show I realized to always have confidence in your self. Its kind of weird to be taking self -confidence advice from a T.V show but it really helped me to understand many things in life. One important life lesson that I have learned through watching this show is to believe in yourself and never give up. If I mess up on my presentation I would panic inside, but knowing never to give up I would continue the presentation proudly. Still till this day my screen saver for my phone hasn’t change. It's still “I got this”.  This quote gives me confidence and hope when no one else can. It always tells me that no matter what happens I did my best and I should be proud and confidence is the key to success. This show has taught me what I’m missing from my life, confidence and hope. Knowing what just happened is the past and now it's a new day to start fresh.

Coming of Age Draft Essay

Scooping my rice and plopping my corn on my plate. Using the tongs to pick up slices of chicken katsu. So hungry after a long day at soccer practice. Waiting until the clock strikes 7:30 to watch the premiere of a T.V show called Young and Hungry on ABC family. Before the premiere I was watching all the trailers and commercials leading up till the premiere. I knew the show would be a funny to watch just like modern family. Some show to get hooked on like pretty little lairs for 6 seasons. One of my favorite actresses, Emily Osment was the main character.

Usually the first episode sets the stage if I’m going to continue watching the show or not. Some how I knew from all the trailers and commercials this show would be very different. This show is supposed to be a comedy, but to me I knew it was going to be much more than that. I had a feeling this show would change my life. After the first episode of this show I was ready to watch the next one and the next one and the next one.

The next morning on the way to school I was getting tired of my phone screen saver.  Always seeing a dinosaur cleaning up the city not the best picture I could choose. Looking out of the window re watching the show in my head over and over again. Also trying to pick a picture for my screen saver at the same time. Thinking about what Gabi did in certain situations in life. My mind always goes back to the quote was “I got this”.  I figured that the quote would give me a boost of confidence and encouragement to get through the day since this quote was stuck in my head. Plus if this quote helps Gabi it should help me. During school I had to present a power point in front of the class. So what kept me clam and confidence is I said to myself “I got this”. Probably I said it like hundred times, but it really gave me a confidence boost. After the presentation I felt amazing like all if needed was a push and I’m off.

"Mini-Essay"

When people come to the Hawaiian Islands for a vacation, the first thing they want to do is to go sight seeing. Seeing the beautiful nature and the blue ocean water is just the perfect memory. When looking at the sights there is a lot of dangers that could happen when you are trying to get the perfect shoot. You are risking your life on the line to see the view. A lot of people and tourist go back to their homes and have the best memories of a life time to remember, some on the other hand don't. Someone of these people like David Potts, Paul Tam Mai, and others never made it back to their families. Their death got their families suing the government. They should be suing the location were they were found dead. It's the location's fault because they have a lack of signs, lack of boundaries, and lack of security.

These people like David Potts, Paul Tam Mai and others went to popular sight seeing attractions. Theses sights such as the Nakalele Point have only one sign by the parking lot. It states "Walk at your own risk" hand painted on a sign. A lot of people don't see the sign and just pass it and go to the sight not knowing to walk at their own risk. Putting more signs and making the signs bright  so people will pay more attention, will help get the point across of walking at their own risk. Having more signs saying the dangers and the risk that you could be putting yourself in. The same thing happened at Hawaiian Paradise Park, no hazards signs. The park have a dangerous rocky cliff that has knocked people offshore. The "landowners could be legally vulnerable if they have not adequately installed and maintained signs notifying the public of potential hazards". Making notifying signs and hazards signs are extremely important because you don't want to be a potential liability. You want to make sure that everyone will be safe.

Reading signs when sight seeing is very important because you want to make sure you are safe and everyone around you are also safe. With deaths happening around popular sight seeing spots it's a real debate on if it's the person's fault, the location's fault, or the government's fault. It's the location's fault because the person doesn't have control of mother nature and the government doesn't own the land so they can't put up their own signs. The location has to take the blame because there is a lack of signs, lack of boundaries, and lack of security.

Group Position Statements

Group: Jocelyn, Jessie and Naomi

Topic: Who is to blamed for the incidents at sight seeing spots on Hawaii?

Arguable/Viewpoints:
Person's fault
Location's fault
Government's fault

Person's fault

Location's fault
lack of having signs
mother nature
lack of boundaries (railings,fences)

Government's fault
lack of funding for signs
lack of notifying the public
lack of having money for up keeping the place

Position Statements:

It's the people fault because they are careless, ignorant, and are unaware of their surroundings.

It's the location's fault because of the lack of having signs and boundaries. Also mother nature can suddenly injure or kill people in an instant.

It's the government's fault because of the lack of funding for signs and up keeping the place. The government also isn't notifying the public about dangerous sight seeing spots.
